(NAPLES, Italy) U.S. First Lady Dr Jill Biden visited Naples Middle High School to meet with Department of Defense students and families aboard the Naval Support site Activity (NSA) in Naples on November 1, 2021. Dr Biden, who has extensive experience in education, visited the school as part of the White House Joining Forces initiative, which supports families of military and military personnel. veterans, caregivers and survivors.
“One of the main goals is to help people understand what it’s like to be a child in the military and to get children like you the support you all deserve.” Biden said during his speech at the pep rally event in the school gymnasium. “I’ve been working with military families for a decade now and on bases in schools like this, in the White House, and in communities across the states.”
As I chatted with other students, I heard what it’s like to work so hard to become the captain of the sports team or the leader of the school game only to have to say goodbye and realize what can be. -being the next school the student attends will not. have this program, Biden said.
“It is a great pleasure and honor to welcome Dr Jill Biden to our NSA Naples High School,” said Captain James Stewart, Commander of NSA Naples. “For the past year and a half, our students and families have persevered despite the lockdowns, canceled events and postponed celebrations. These military families have continued to demonstrate resilience. There is no better way to celebrate our return to events in person than to have a guest speaker who is part of a military family and understands the challenges and rewards of this military life.
Italy was one of the first countries to enter lockdown in Europe, imposing a strict quarantine for nearly 75 days. Residents could only leave their homes for work, medical necessities, shopping and other emergencies.
“The first time we went into lockdown it was really stressful for everyone because we didn’t know what was going on, and we didn’t know when we were going to go back to school, and we were all isolated. one another. said Cadet Lt. Cmdr. Jazlynn Ballman, commanding officer of cadets, Naples Middle High School Navy Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, who introduced Biden on stage at the cheer rally. things were going to happen, and we were all stressed out because we were worried about the pandemic while school was upon us. ”
As part of stringent COVID-19 mitigation measures, students had the chance to hear Biden speak – one of the first such events in more than 18 months.
The cheering rally involved the color guard of the school’s Navy Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) presenting the National Ensign, a performance by the school’s choir and marching band, and special congratulations to the school’s undefeated volleyball team. Due to COVID-19 mitigation measures, only some students were in attendance, but each student could bring a guest from their home. Additionally, Biden’s speech was broadcast live to every classroom, allowing everyone to watch the event.
In addition, the First Lady stopped in two classrooms for a surprise visit with students from robotics and cooking classes.
“I also heard so many great parts of this trip,” Biden said. “The chance to experience life in a foreign country and meet people from all over the world who learn to adapt to any situation and find that you are truly capable of handling more than you ever thought possible. . ”
I first launched the Joining Forces initiative in April 2011 with First Lady Michele Obama, to inspire, educate and encourage action by the public and private sectors to ensure that military personnel, veterans and their families have the tools they need to be successful throughout their lives, Biden says.
In 2016, the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI), a college preparation program, fulfilled its commitment with Joining Forces to expand to 200 military-connected schools, providing more than 60,000 connected students to the army. This program expands access to rigorous advanced placement courses in math, science and English.
“In 2018, DoDEA-Europe (Department of Defense Education Activity) implemented a strategic approach to increase AP course offerings and enrollment,” said Dr. Michelle Howard-Brahaney, DoDEA Superintendent for Europe from South. “As a result of this new approach, the region has seen an increase in both the number of students enrolled in AP courses and AP exams administered. In 2020, at Naples Middle High School for example, 178 students participated in AP courses, which is an increase of 30 students compared to the previous year.
The 178 students – representing 53% of the student body – took 276 exams, 52 more exams from the previous year, Howard-Brahaney said. Living abroad as a military-related student certainly has its fair share of challenges. DoDEA operates 160 accredited schools, many of which are located in 11 countries.
According to DoDEA, the average child in a military family will relocate six to nine times during an academic career, which is three times more common than non-military families – not to mention the additional hardships military children face. when one or both parents are deployed.
“To the students, I hope the lessons you learn will make you strong, wise, kind and courageous,” Biden said. “The experiences you have had are the gifts you have to give. To parents, you have heard the stories of your children, you have seen how strong and resilient they are, you have seen how they have adjusted. Come in here and just the energy and the way they all came together, and the excitement of it all, it’s really a family in this school, and I want to thank you so much for asking me to be your guest.
